Can you keep different types of birds together?

We have a parakeet who's mate just died. We're planning on getting another bird to keep her company soon but I was wondering if it needed to be another 'keet? Can you keep finches & parakeets together or should they be kept in separate cages? I'm planning on another parakeet, but want to be sure of my options.
